Andy Pettitte finally had a bad game, Chien Ming Wang got shelled, and Joba Chamberlain gave up his first earned run but the New York Yankees still escaped with a 2-1 series victory over the Boston Red Sox. A sweep would have left a AL East division crown a possibility, but instead the Yankees will now focus on their wild card lead, which stood at just 2 1/2 games after Sunday night.
Even the most optimistic Yankee fan could admit that the Yankees could have easily gotten swept in this series. Were it not for a terrific comeback in game one that saw the Yankees score six runs off the vaunted Red Sox bullpen in the eighth inning; and one more clutch home run by Derek Jeter in the third game, the Yankees might have woken up Monday morning tied with the Tigers in the Wild Card and 8 1/2 games behind the first place Red Sox.
